New
Partnership Means More Access to Health Education Locally
The
Housing Authority of Paducah has agreed to allow West Kentucky
Community and Technical College to open a new health education
program in a 4,500-square-foot building adjacent to the CJ Moss
Child Development Center in Elmwood Court.
The partnership equates to
a $270,000 in-kind donation to the college through Paducah Junior
College, Inc., and is the fourth lead gift to the college's
Allied Health initiative of the Fulfilling the Promise Campaign.
The building will include
two classrooms, a computer laboratory, four single hospital
bed labs, one two-bed lab, three faculty offices, a lobby area
and a faculty/staff lounge.
"The
allied health programs, particularly nursing, have outgrown
our Allied Health facility built in 1991. The building, donated
by the Housing Authority of Paducah, is a former clinic and
ideal for simulating clinical laboratory experience," said
WKCTC President Barbara Veazey. "It will be equipped with
state of the art equipment and furnishings and therefore continue
the quality of nursing education we are known for."
The college plans to teach CPR training courses,
First Aid & Safety courses, allied health program, and basic
and advanced nursing assistant courses at the facility. In addition,
the building will provide additional patient care labs for nursing
assistant, practical nursing, registered nursing and allied
health programs. Nursing and allied health program skills competencies
testing will also be available at the new facility.
"The space will allow us to increase
our offerings as well as the opportunity to be more involved
with the community." Veazey said.
Officials expect to begin offering courses
in the building later this fall.
"The housing authority is excited about
our new partnership with WKCTC that will create a learning opportunity
for all people in Western Kentucky," said Cal Ross, housing
authority executive director. "The $270,000 in-kind contribution
from us is but a mere drop in the bucket in assisting WKCTC
to help people meet their dreams."
West Kentucky Community and Technical College
has received pledge commitments of $842,300 for the Allied Health
initiatives within the Fulfilling the Promise Campaign. The
college has raised more than $1 million for all of the initiatives
combined.
